The procedure of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM)comprises the involvement of partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. There are some risks associated with FGM including both short term and long term consequences. The short term consequences are severe pain, shock, bleeding, tetanus or bacterial infection, urine retention, open sores in the genital region and injury to nearby genital tissue. The long term consequences including recurrent bladder and urinary tract infections, cysts, infertility, an increased risk of childbirth complications and newborn death [1-5] There are other consequences as well including death, life-long physical disability, life-long disability in sexual life, hindering natural physical movements, absence of erogenous feelings in sexual intercourse, severe pain and bleeding during and/or immediately after sexual intercourse, and cases of maternal death during delivery. In many settings where FGM is practiced it is justified because there is a natural consensus that if individuals do not perform FGM on their girls they risk being excluded, criticized, or even sigmatized . Although the government has tried to make this practice illegal communities such as the pokot disobey the law and continue to practice FGM.In order to abolish the harmful FGM/C practices, UN agencies implemented government-level advocacy initiatives and collaborative programmes with the Kenyan government and development organizations in Kenya. These indicated that assistance through joint involvement of international communities along with government could be more effective in implementation of Kenyan FGM act.

Finally, the study concluded that the girls and women did not support FGM. Although the Kenyan government has strong laws prohibiting FGM, enforcement of such laws was taking time. The study recommended that advocacy initiatives and integrated support from government, development agencies and international community to eliminate FGM.

The Cut

Rhodney Kataka

African communities have always given circumcision a lot of significance. However, in the past three decades the rite has seen numerous changes that have given it a different meaning.
So much has been lost in the way communities handle the circumcision rite. Today’s generation and that of the past are worlds apart. Only a section of communities uphold traditions. For the Kikuyu community for instance, the decision as to who and when circumcision was to be done was determined by the elders. It was also based on prevailing factors such as weather and peace. Circumcision could not be conducted during a famine or when there were tribal wars and disease outbreaks. This is no longer the case as the decision has since been confined to the family set up.. Urbanisation has also contributed to the change in the way the practice is conducted.
These days the youth are taught to be respectable and responsible adults but in a different way.The modern circumcision is done through a surgical process in institutions such as hospitals and schools and camps. There are various advantages of doing it in the modern way and they include
1. It has helped curb the spread of diseases for example Hiv/Aids and other sexual related diseases. This is because the the tools are advanced, well cleaned and also sterilized,
2. It reduces the risk of getting urinary tract infections.
3. There is better care and treatment after the circumcision as the wounds are well dressed.
4. It reduces the chances of getting cancer of the penis.
5. The modern way of circumcision is also less painful when using the prepex device. A set of two ri ngs will be placed around his manhood and a cream applied to numb the area instead of using an anaesthetic drug injection.

6. Apart from being a sign of manhood these days the youth are educated on Christian values, careers , sex drug and substance among other things.
